WHEN THE CLIMATE CHANGES, CAN CAPTIVE WILDLIFE ADAPT?

Extreme heat is raising a larger animal-welfare question about choice, control and captivity.

WHY THIS MATTERS NOW

During extreme summer heat in Japan, three female lions died at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park. Post-mortem examinations found severe dehydration and multiple-organ failure. Heatstroke was suspected, although the exact cause remained under investigation. The incident prompted zoo-welfare specialist Professor Samantha Ward to ask whether zoos are prepared for a changing climate.

The incident understandably raised questions about climate change and zoo preparedness.

But it also raises a much larger question:

When environmental conditions become difficult, what options does a captive wild animal actually have?

That question reaches beyond temperature. It goes to an increasingly important concept in animal-welfare science: choice and control.

THREE LIONS — AND A LARGER QUESTION

In July 2026, temperatures around Tama Zoological Park approached 39°C (102°F). Most of the zoo’s 16 lions became lethargic and lost their appetites, and three females died.

Post-mortem examinations found severe dehydration and multiple-organ failure. Heatstroke was suspected, although the exact cause remained under investigation.

The incident led Professor Samantha Ward, a specialist in zoo animal welfare and legislation at Nottingham Trent University, to ask:

Are zoos ready for a changing climate?

Her analysis points to an issue that can’t be solved simply by adding more shade.

THE DIFFERENCE IS CHOICE:

Lions evolved in warm environments, but temperature alone doesn’t determine whether an animal can cope with heat. Humidity, water availability, shade, health, age and behavioral opportunities all matter.

In the wild, an animal experiencing uncomfortable conditions may be able to move, seek shade or water, select another microclimate, rest or alter when it is active.

None of this means wild animals are protected from extreme weather.

The important difference is their ability to respond.

Captivity changes that equation.

A zoo animal can choose only among the alternatives its enclosure and management provide. It cannot independently relocate somewhere else.

That makes choice and control a welfare issue.

Research increasingly recognizes the importance of allowing animals meaningful control over aspects of their environment. A 2023 scientific review by Maisy Englund and Katherine Cronin examined growing evidence connecting choice and control with animal welfare and psychological well-being.

The principle is straightforward:

Good welfare isn’t only about what an animal is provided. It’s also about what the animal is able to choose.

CLIMATE CHANGE RAISES THE STAKES

Zoo environments are engineered environments, designed around assumptions about the conditions animals will experience.

Those conditions are changing.

Extreme heat should therefore increasingly be treated as a foreseeable welfare risk.

Facilities can respond with shade, ventilation, climate-controlled refuges, misting systems, water features and real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity.

But simply providing these resources isn’t enough.

Can the animal access them when it chooses?

A climate-controlled retreat offers limited choice if humans determine when an animal may enter it. A pool provides little thermal choice if social dynamics prevent a particular animal from using it.

The better question isn’t simply:

“Does the enclosure have cooling features?”

It is:

“Can the animal choose among meaningful alternatives?”

THE INDIVIDUAL ANIMAL MATTERS:

Animals of the same species can respond very differently to identical environmental conditions.

Age, health, physical condition, previous experience and social relationships can influence an individual’s vulnerability.

That means welfare can’t be assessed simply by determining whether an enclosure is considered appropriate for a species.

We have to look at the individual animal.

Changes in appetite, activity, posture, social behavior or enclosure use may provide early warnings of environmental stress — potentially before the situation becomes a medical emergency.

THIS ISN’T JUST ABOUT LIONS:

Nor is it limited to animals we associate with cold climates.

Ward identifies great apes, tapirs, cheetahs and elephants among animals that can experience thermal stress as temperature and humidity interact.

Even animals that evolved in hot climates didn’t evolve inside static exhibits.

They evolved in environments where behavior itself helps regulate exposure.

They move. They seek shade. They find water. They change their activity. They respond.

Captivity necessarily limits the scale on which those responses can occur.

And that creates a responsibility for the people who determine the conditions in which those animals live.

FROM SURVIVING TO HAVING A CHOICE:

Modern animal welfare asks more than whether an animal is fed, housed and medically cared for.

It also considers psychological well-being, positive experiences, behavioral opportunities and the ability to exercise some control over the environment.

Climate change brings those principles into sharper focus.

Facilities caring for captive wildlife must anticipate changing conditions, understand animals as individuals, monitor their behavior and provide meaningful alternatives.

And wherever safely possible, animals should be able to choose among them.

Because when we decide where an animal must live, we also accept responsibility for many of the choices that animal no longer has.

So perhaps the most important question raised by a changing climate isn’t simply:

Can captive wildlife survive it?

It’s:

How much choice will we give them in how they respond to it?
