On July 10, 2026, the AZA-accredited Fort Wayne Zoo temporarily evacuated its African Savanna exhibit after a male white-bearded wildebeest moved from its primary habitat into an adjacent habitat through a shared pond area.

According to the zoo, a staff member immediately recognized the situation, initiated the emergency response protocol, and guests were evacuated from the exhibit. Once the area was cleared, the wildebeest returned to its enclosure on its own and was subsequently monitored by animal care and veterinary staff.
