“Lions and tigers begin a long-awaited rescue from a notorious Argentine zoo”
Thirty lions and tigers from a closed Argentine zoo are starting a new life at wildlife sanctuaries in South Africa and the United States:l
For years, lions and tigers at Argentina’s notorious Luján Zoo lived in cramped conditions at a facility once known for allowing visitors to touch, handle and pose for photographs with big cats.
The zoo was finally shut down in 2020 amid serious animal-welfare and public-safety concerns.
But closing the gates didn’t immediately end the animals’ ordeal.
Dozens remained behind, some suffering from obesity, muscle loss, dental and kidney disease, old injuries and complications associated with declawing.
Now, their story is finally changing.
In one of the world’s largest relocations of captive big cats, 30 lions and tigers are beginning their journey from the former zoo to sanctuary.
🌿 15 will travel to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.
🌿 15 will travel to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado.
There, animals once confined for entertainment will have access to expansive habitats, specialized veterinary care and something they have been denied for far too long:
The opportunity to simply be lions and tigers.
More than 20 big cats still remain at Luján, and the work to secure appropriate lifelong homes for them continues.
This rescue doesn’t erase what these animals endured.
But it demonstrates something worth celebrating:
Captivity may write the beginning of an animal’s story. It doesn’t always have to write the ending.
Today, 30 lives are moving toward something better.
